We are a network of organisations and activists supporting Britain’s 1.5 million people of Pakistani origin.
We help our members to break down the barriers that hold their communities back.
We speak with one voice and campaign for the needs of Pakistanis to be heard and acted upon.
And we share ideas and learn from each other as we work together to help people succeed in all walks of life and be rewarded fairly for their efforts.
NPO-UK is unique because it focuses on the particular needs of Pakistanis, which are very different from those of other ethnic minority groups.
Our members represent a wide variety of communities across the UK, so we also recognise that each individual faces different challenges depending on his or her age, gender and geographical location.
Why We Are Needed
Pakistanis are among Britain’s largest and most youthful ethnic groups. Most families have been living in the UK for generations and are entrepreneurial and hard-working. Yet all too many are still caught up in a vicious circle of poverty and deprivation.
Pakistanis are more likely to be out of work, under-employed or in an insecure job with few opportunities to progress. Low incomes trap families in crowded, unhealthy accommodation. Over half of our children live in poverty, compared to a quarter of their white British counterparts, and many do not believe that their futures will be any less bleak than those of their parents.
It has taken a global pandemic to raise public awareness of the links between income and life expectancy. Pakistani men have the highest rates of heart disease in the UK and are five or six times more likely to have type 2 diabetes than the general population.
The structural inequalities faced by all British ethnic minorities have been thrown into stark relief by coronavirus. Pakistanis face even more barriers to progress because they suffer from both racial and religious discrimination. Negative perceptions of Pakistan affect how its diaspora communities are viewed by other British people. Our women may also be held back by cultural conservatism and inability to speak English. More than half of them have unpaid caring responsibilities.
Yet all too often the needs of British Pakistanis have been ignored because they are less able to defend their case and represent themselves than other ethnic minorities.
More than three in ten Pakistanis live in the most deprived English neighbourhoods.
The employment rate is 56%, compared to 77% for the white population.
In 2018-19 Pakistanis had the highest infant mortality rates in England and Wales.
Seventy-five per cent of first-generation, and 50 per cent of second-generation, women are not working.
In a YouGov poll in 2018 Pakistanis scored minus four for perception by the host community, compared to plus 25 for Indans.
How We Work
We are an inclusive, non-religious network of organisations and activists, working to ensure that Pakistanis across the UK can look forward to a brighter tomorrow.
We encourage women and young people to become future leaders, not just in our own communities but also in wider society.
We share our expertise with politicians, civil servants, business leaders and other decision makers who want to create a fairer and more open society.
We support our members to work directly to create new opportunities for Pakistanis in their neighbourhoods and come together to influence public policy at local, regional and national levels. This means that we are uniquely placed to address all the issues that are holding our people back.
